About This Test
Ureaplasma is a type of bacteria that lives in the urogenital tract. While often present without causing problems, it can cause persistent urethritis, cervicitis, and has been linked to pregnancy complications. Ureaplasma is NOT included in standard STI panels, which is why symptoms can persist despite 'negative' results. Our PCR test detects both Ureaplasma urealyticum and Ureaplasma parvum.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why isn't ureaplasma tested in standard STI panels?
Ureaplasma is very common and often doesn't cause problems. Mass screening isn't recommended. However, when you have persistent symptoms that standard tests can't explain, ureaplasma testing becomes valuable.
Should I treat ureaplasma if I have no symptoms?
Generally, asymptomatic ureaplasma doesn't require treatment. We typically treat when there are symptoms, when a partner is symptomatic, or in certain pregnancy situations.
What antibiotics treat ureaplasma?
Ureaplasma can be treated with antibiotics when clinically indicated. Contact your GP for treatment options.
