About This Test
Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen) is an emerging sexually transmitted bacterium that causes urethritis in men and cervicitis/PID in women. It's particularly concerning because of high rates of antibiotic resistance - standard azithromycin often fails in up to 50% of cases. Our testing includes resistance marker detection to help guide appropriate management.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Mycoplasma genitalium difficult to treat?
Mgen has developed high resistance to azithromycin, the antibiotic traditionally used for STIs. Up to 50% of UK strains are resistant. Resistance marker testing helps guide appropriate treatment.
Is Mycoplasma genitalium serious?
Untreated Mgen can cause persistent urethritis in men and PID in women, potentially affecting fertility. It also increases HIV transmission risk. With correct treatment guided by resistance testing, it's curable.
How did I get Mycoplasma genitalium?
Mgen is sexually transmitted through genital contact. It can be passed through vaginal, anal, and possibly oral sex. Using condoms significantly reduces transmission risk.
